Description: This invention proposes a simple and intuitive method to resolve the fundamental problem of bandwidth estimation for low latency live streaming. The algorithm uses the relationship between the estimated bandwidth, total buffer capacity, instantaneous playback speed, and the buffer occupancy to decide the playback speed and the bit rate of the representation to download. We evaluated QLive under a diverse set of scenarios and found that it enables the latency control as small as 1 second while playing the video at normal speed for more than 88% of the total time, and the average playback speed of just 1.1 times normal speed with 9%-184% better Quality-of-Experience (QoE) than the existing algorithms for different latency limits. Also, the proposed bandwidth estimation has 90% accuracy, and the accuracy remains unaffected by the segment durations.
