Project Name: Sea State Identification

Project Sponsor: Ascenz Solutions Pte Ltd

Grant Amount: $21,400

Duration: 6 months

Description: This project aims to improve vessel performance efficiency by automatically identifying and recording sea state accurately and systematically. Sea states are an essential parameter to be taken into consideration for onboard vessel performance optimization. Typically, sea states are provided by weather information services via buoys and satellites, which is not directly captured on the ship for processing. Instead, the captain would visually identify the sea conditions and then calculate and categorize according to the Beaufort scale. Sea states are calculated by estimating the significant wave height and mean wave period. To further improve vessel performance efficiency, it will be useful to identify and record sea state automatically and accurately. There is an opportunity to rely on machine vision and machine learning to install the camera and motion sensors to measure significant wave height and mean wave period. That way, sea state information is readily available for vessel performance analytics.
